The Supreme Court on Wednesday ruled that online gaming platforms cannot be treated merely as intermediaries and observed that such activities amount to actionable claims under GST law.

The ruling comes as a setback for online gaming companies that had challenged the retrospective tax demand, arguing that treating online gaming as ?gambling? under GST law contradicted judicial precedents established by the Supreme Court and various High Courts over the years.

The supreme court has pronounced its order in the matters relating to the show cause notices issued to the company and its subsidiaries for short payment of goods and services tax.

In an exchange filing, the company said that a copy of the Supreme Court?s order was not yet available. However, based on the limited information currently available, the company believes that the basis of GST computation adopted by it since October 2023 would now apply retrospectively for the period between July 2017 and September 2023 as well.

The company stated that this interpretation would be a favourable for its business, as the levy of GST would accordingly not be on the amount of gross bet value of all games played during the relevant period (which had the effect of notionally multiplying the revenue and consequently the GST payable on it), but would be on the amount received from players for the chips sold to them.

Recently, the company reported a sharp decline in earnings for Q4 FY26. Its consolidated net profit tumbled 90% to Rs 16.45 crore on a 11.72% decline in revenue from operations to Rs 161.25 crore in Q4 FY26 over Q4 FY25.

Wockhardt Ltd soared 13.05% to Rs 1737.8. The stock was the second biggest gainer in 'A' group. On the BSE, 12.62 lakh shares were traded on the counter so far as against the average daily volumes of 89991 shares in the past one month.

Tejas Networks Ltd surged 11.42% to Rs 474.15. The stock was the third biggest gainer in 'A' group. On the BSE, 12.06 lakh shares were traded on the counter so far as against the average daily volumes of 1.85 lakh shares in the past one month.

Cigniti Technologies Ltd added 10.56% to Rs 1277.3. The stock was the fourth biggest gainer in 'A' group. On the BSE, 86151 shares were traded on the counter so far as against the average daily volumes of 7720 shares in the past one month.

Cartrade Tech Ltd jumped 10.19% to Rs 1812. The stock was the fifth biggest gainer in 'A' group. On the BSE, 29254 shares were traded on the counter so far as against the average daily volumes of 22093 shares in the past one month.

The company reported profit before exceptional items and tax of Rs 25.79 crore in Q4 FY26, compared with Rs 42.66 crore in the same period last year. The firm reported an exceptional loss of Rs 5.51 crore during the quarter.

Total expenses declined 3.16% to Rs 149.19 crore in Q4 FY26, compared with Rs 154.06 crore in Q4 FY25. Cost of material consumed stood at Rs 13.23 crore (down 13.81% YoY), employee benefit expenses were at Rs 45.07 crore (up 17.43% YoY), and license fees & registration charges stood at Rs 27.71 crore (down 8.82% YoY) during the period under review.

On the segmental front, revenue from the casino gaming division declined 10.76% YoY to Rs 148.48 crore in Q4 FY26, while revenue from the hospitality division fell 20.75% YoY to Rs 13.25 crore during the quarter.

On a full-year basis, the company?s consolidated net profit tanked 73.13% to Rs 85.29 crore on a 5.64% drop in revenue from operations to Rs 688.46 crore in FY26 over FY25.

Meanwhile, the company?s board recommended a final dividend of Rs 0.50 per equity share (50%). The dividend will be paid within 30 days from the date of shareholder approval at the ensuing AGM.

Sales declined 11.72% to Rs 161.25 crore in the quarter ended March 2026 as against Rs 182.65 crore during the previous quarter ended March 2025.

For the full year,net profit declined 65.75% to Rs 85.29 crore in the year ended March 2026 as against Rs 248.99 crore during the previous year ended March 2025. Sales declined 5.64% to Rs 688.46 crore in the year ended March 2026 as against Rs 729.63 crore during the previous year ended March 2025.
