Sensex up 171 pts; breadth turns negative

Equity indices traded sideways with small gains in early afternoon trade. Pharma and auto scrips advanced while metal and media shares were under pressure. The Nifty traded below the 17,300 mark.
At 12:30 IST, the barometer index, the S&P BSE Sensex rose 170.98 points or 0.3% at 57,764.67. The Nifty 50 index gained 50.65 points or 0.29% at 17,272.65.
In the broader market, the S&P BSE Mid-Cap index added 0.41% while the S&P BSE Small-Cap index rose 0.38%.
The market breadth, indicating the overall health of the market, turned negative. On the BSE, shares 1,501 rose and 1,751 shares fell. A total of 123 shares were unchanged.
Derivatives:
The NSE's India VIX, a gauge of market's expectation of volatility over the near term, fell 3.5% to 21.8175. The Nifty 31 March 2022 futures were trading at 17,315.50, at a premium of 50 points as compared with the spot at 17,265.5.
Buzzing Index:
The Nifty Metal index slipped 0.72% to 6,512, snapping its eight day winning run. The index saw profit booking after rising 11% in eight days.
Coal India (down 2.51%), NMDC (down 1.61%), Steel Authority of India (down 1.05%), Tata Steel (down 0.71%), Hindalco Industries (down 0.68%) and Vedanta Ltd (down 0.54%) were top losers in metal space.
Stocks in Spotlight:
HDFC Bank rose 0.57%. The private sector lender on Tuesday said that it will pick 15% stake in India Debt Resolution Company for Rs 7.5 crore. The bank said that the equity investment will be done in tranches, the first of which for Rs 3 crore is expected to be complete by 31 March 2022. Subsequent tranches of equity investment will be made as and when determined by the Board of Directors of IDRCL, it said. Post investment of all tranches, the bank will hold upto 15% of the equity share capital of the IDRCL.
Shriram Transport Finance was down 0.9%. The NBFC on Tuesday announced that the company's board will consider and approve fund raising by issuing non-convertible debt securities / bonds during the month ending 30 April 2022.

Nifty hovers at 17,100; broader market underperforms

The benchmark indices continued trading with small losses in early afternoon trade. Banks and financial stocks were under pressure. The Nifty hovered at 17,100 mark.
At 12:30 IST, the barometer index, the S&P BSE Sensex dropped 174.17 points or 0.3% at 57,188.06. The Nifty 50 index lost 44.65 points or 0.26% at 17,108.95.
The broader market saw more selling pressure than main indices. The S&P BSE Mid-Cap index fell 0.83% while the S&P BSE Small-Cap index slipped 0.67%.
The market breadth, indicating the overall health of the market, was weak. On the BSE, shares 979 rose and 2,266 shares fell. A total of 136 shares were unchanged.
Derivatives:
The NSE's India VIX, a gauge of market's expectation of volatility over the near term, rose 0.72% to 23.6. The Nifty 31 March 2022 futures were trading at 17,118.30, at a premium of 31.35 points as compared with the spot at 17,086.95.

The Nifty Realty index slipped 0.89% to 445.15, snapping its two day winning streak. The index saw profit taking after rising 1.72% in two days.
Indiabulls Real Estate (down 3.33%), DLF (down 1.59%), Godrej Properties (down 0.77%), Phoenix Mills (down 0.75%) and Sunteck Realty (down 0.55%) were top losers in realty space.

Vedanta rose 0.71%. The mining company said that its board has approved capital expenditure plans amounting to $1.5 billion for its oil and gas, zinc, and steel businesses. The company said that the strategic priority for the Cairn Oil & Gas business is to increase near-term volume through infill wells and add resources through exploration. In order to deliver this, the board of directors has approved a capex investment (net) of $687 million. The company further informed that at Zinc International, the Gamsberg Phase II Expansion Project at a cost of $466 million will double up Gamsberg's capacity from 4 MTPA Ore to 8 MTPA to produce additional 200ktpa MiC Zinc. It will make Vedanta Zinc International as largest zinc producer of South Africa. Further, it has set aside $348 million for an expansion project at its subsidiary ESL Steel.
GAIL (India) rose 2.81% to Rs 151.80 after the company said its board will consider a share buyback on 31 March 2022.

Indices opened tad lower and traded with tiny losses in early trade. The Nifty traded below the 17,150 level. Banks and financial stocks saw selling pressure while media shares rallied.
At 9:24 IST, the barometer index, the S&P BSE Sensex, was down 193.92 points or 0.34% to 57,168.51. The Nifty 50 index lost 28.9 points or 0.17% to 17,124.50.
In the broader market, the S&P BSE Mid-Cap index rose 0.3% while the S&P BSE Small-Cap index gained 0.17%.
Buyers outnumbered sellers. On the BSE, 1385 shares rose and 1194 shares fell. A total of 123 shares were unchanged.
Stocks in Spotlight:
PVR jumped 5.34% while shares of INOX Leisure rallied 12.55% after the board of directors of PVR and INOX Leisure, at their respective meetings, approved an all stock amalgamation of INOX with PVR. INOX shareholders will receive 3 shares in PVR for 10 shares of INOX.
GAIL (India) gained 2.4%. The board of GAIL (India) will consider a share buyback on 31 March 2022.
Dilip Buildcon rose 0.74%. The road construction company on Saturday announced that it has been declared as L-1 bidder for road construction project by the National Highways Authority of India in the state of Telangana.

Sensex drops 409 pts; breadth positive

Equity indices traded near the day's low with deep losses in early afternoon trade. IT, media and pharma stocks bucked broader selling pressure. At 12:20 IST, the barometer index, the S&P BSE Sensex, declined 409.19 points or 0.77% at 52,433.62. The Nifty 50 index lost 0.84% at 15,729.95.
The broader market bucked weak trend. The S&P BSE Mid-Cap index was down only 0.09% while the S&P BSE Small-Cap index gained 0.17%.
The market breadth was positive. On the BSE, 1,803 shares rose and 1,345 shares fell. A total of 127 shares were unchanged.
Soaring crude oil prices due to ongoing Russia-Ukraine crisis continued to spook investors. India imports majority of its crude oil requirements. A spike in crude oil prices has raised concerns over the impact on inflation, currency and input cost for companies across sectors. Higher crude oil prices could increase India's expenditure and adversely affects the fiscal deficit.
Derivatives:
The NSE's India VIX, a gauge of market's expectation of volatility over the near term, fell 1.8% to 28.8. The Nifty 24 February 2022 futures were trading at 15,750, at a premium of 3 points as compared with the spot at 15,747.
Buzzing Index:
The Nifty Pharma index rose 0.63% to 12,625.80, snapping its four day losing streak. The pharmaceutical index saw bargain hunting after falling 3% in four days.
Natco Pharma (up 1.91%), Pfizer (up 1.88%), IPCA Laboratories (up 1.84%), Biocon (up 1.71%), Aurobindo Pharma (up 1.67%) and Cipla (up 1.62%) were top gainers in pharmaceutical space.
Stocks in Spotlight:
Alembic Pharmaceuticals rose 0.26%. The drug company on Tuesday informed that company's joint venture, Aleor Dermaceuticals has received final approval from US Food and Drug Administration (USFDA) for nystatin and triamcinolone acetonide ointment. Nystatin and triamcinolone Acetonide Ointment is indicated for the treatment of cutaneous candidiasis.
Ramkrishna Forgings rose 3.03% to Rs 806.35 after the company said it entered business association from USA axle manufacturer for light vehicle segment. A leading Axle manufacturer in the USA has encouraged Ramkrishna Forgings for an estimated business of Rs 70 crore over a 5-year period. The products will be used in the rear axle applications.
Spandana Sphoorty Financial was down 1.42%. The NBFC said a meeting of the management committee of the board of directors is scheduled to be held on Thursday, 10 March 2022 to consider fund raising plans. The funds would be raised via the issue of non-convertible debentures (NCDs) on a private placement basis.
Politics:
As per exit polls conducted by the media, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is expected to sweep with a majority in Uttar Pradesh and Manipur, while the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) will unseat the Congress in Punjab, as per the polls for the just-finished five assembly elections released on 7 March 2022. In Uttarakhand, the ruling BJP may emerge as the first party to retain power in the hill-state. The BJP is likely to retain power in Manipur. Goa is likely to witness a fractured mandate in the recently contested assembly elections.
The elections to the five states - Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Uttarakhand, Goa and Manipur - were held in seven phases between 10 February 2022 and 7 March 2022. The results will be announced on 10 March 2022.

Nifty hovers at 17,100; broader market underperforms

The benchmark indices continued trading with small losses in early afternoon trade. Banks and financial stocks were under pressure. The Nifty hovered at 17,100 mark.
At 12:30 IST, the barometer index, the S&P BSE Sensex dropped 174.17 points or 0.3% at 57,188.06. The Nifty 50 index lost 44.65 points or 0.26% at 17,108.95.
The broader market saw more selling pressure than main indices. The S&P BSE Mid-Cap index fell 0.83% while the S&P BSE Small-Cap index slipped 0.67%.
The market breadth, indicating the overall health of the market, was weak. On the BSE, shares 979 rose and 2,266 shares fell. A total of 136 shares were unchanged.
Derivatives:
The NSE's India VIX, a gauge of market's expectation of volatility over the near term, rose 0.72% to 23.6. The Nifty 31 March 2022 futures were trading at 17,118.30, at a premium of 31.35 points as compared with the spot at 17,086.95.
Buzzing Index:
The Nifty Realty index slipped 0.89% to 445.15, snapping its two day winning streak. The index saw profit taking after rising 1.72% in two days.
Indiabulls Real Estate (down 3.33%), DLF (down 1.59%), Godrej Properties (down 0.77%), Phoenix Mills (down 0.75%) and Sunteck Realty (down 0.55%) were top losers in realty space.
Stocks in Spotlight:
Vedanta rose 0.71%. The mining company said that its board has approved capital expenditure plans amounting to $1.5 billion for its oil and gas, zinc, and steel businesses. The company said that the strategic priority for the Cairn Oil & Gas business is to increase near-term volume through infill wells and add resources through exploration. In order to deliver this, the board of directors has approved a capex investment (net) of $687 million. The company further informed that at Zinc International, the Gamsberg Phase II Expansion Project at a cost of $466 million will double up Gamsberg's capacity from 4 MTPA Ore to 8 MTPA to produce additional 200ktpa MiC Zinc. It will make Vedanta Zinc International as largest zinc producer of South Africa. Further, it has set aside $348 million for an expansion project at its subsidiary ESL Steel.
GAIL (India) rose 2.81% to Rs 151.80 after the company said its board will consider a share buyback on 31 March 2022.

Indices drift lower in early trade

Indices opened tad lower and traded with tiny losses in early trade. The Nifty traded below the 17,150 level. Banks and financial stocks saw selling pressure while media shares rallied.
At 9:24 IST, the barometer index, the S&P BSE Sensex, was down 193.92 points or 0.34% to 57,168.51. The Nifty 50 index lost 28.9 points or 0.17% to 17,124.50.
In the broader market, the S&P BSE Mid-Cap index rose 0.3% while the S&P BSE Small-Cap index gained 0.17%.
Buyers outnumbered sellers. On the BSE, 1385 shares rose and 1194 shares fell. A total of 123 shares were unchanged.
Stocks in Spotlight:
PVR jumped 5.34% while shares of INOX Leisure rallied 12.55% after the board of directors of PVR and INOX Leisure, at their respective meetings, approved an all stock amalgamation of INOX with PVR. INOX shareholders will receive 3 shares in PVR for 10 shares of INOX.
GAIL (India) gained 2.4%. The board of GAIL (India) will consider a share buyback on 31 March 2022.
Dilip Buildcon rose 0.74%. The road construction company on Saturday announced that it has been declared as L-1 bidder for road construction project by the National Highways Authority of India in the state of Telangana.
Global Markets:
Asian stocks were trading mixed on Monday as coronavirus lockdown in Shanghai looked set to hit global activity, while throwing another wrench into supply chains that could add to inflationary pressures.
U.S. stock benchmarks closed mostly higher Friday, following choppy trade, after oil prices rebounded on the back of reports of a missile strike on a Saudi Aramco facility and as investors continued to weigh rising interest rates.
New York Fed President John Williams on Friday said he would support a half-point move if justified but indicated it was premature to make a call on the size of a future rate increase.

Sensex drops 409 pts; breadth positive

Equity indices traded near the day's low with deep losses in early afternoon trade. IT, media and pharma stocks bucked broader selling pressure. At 12:20 IST, the barometer index, the S&P BSE Sensex, declined 409.19 points or 0.77% at 52,433.62. The Nifty 50 index lost 0.84% at 15,729.95.
The broader market bucked weak trend. The S&P BSE Mid-Cap index was down only 0.09% while the S&P BSE Small-Cap index gained 0.17%.
The market breadth was positive. On the BSE, 1,803 shares rose and 1,345 shares fell. A total of 127 shares were unchanged.
Soaring crude oil prices due to ongoing Russia-Ukraine crisis continued to spook investors. India imports majority of its crude oil requirements. A spike in crude oil prices has raised concerns over the impact on inflation, currency and input cost for companies across sectors. Higher crude oil prices could increase India's expenditure and adversely affects the fiscal deficit.
Derivatives:
The NSE's India VIX, a gauge of market's expectation of volatility over the near term, fell 1.8% to 28.8. The Nifty 24 February 2022 futures were trading at 15,750, at a premium of 3 points as compared with the spot at 15,747.
Buzzing Index:
The Nifty Pharma index rose 0.63% to 12,625.80, snapping its four day losing streak. The pharmaceutical index saw bargain hunting after falling 3% in four days.
Natco Pharma (up 1.91%), Pfizer (up 1.88%), IPCA Laboratories (up 1.84%), Biocon (up 1.71%), Aurobindo Pharma (up 1.67%) and Cipla (up 1.62%) were top gainers in pharmaceutical space.
Stocks in Spotlight:
Alembic Pharmaceuticals rose 0.26%. The drug company on Tuesday informed that company's joint venture, Aleor Dermaceuticals has received final approval from US Food and Drug Administration (USFDA) for nystatin and triamcinolone acetonide ointment. Nystatin and triamcinolone Acetonide Ointment is indicated for the treatment of cutaneous candidiasis.
Ramkrishna Forgings rose 3.03% to Rs 806.35 after the company said it entered business association from USA axle manufacturer for light vehicle segment. A leading Axle manufacturer in the USA has encouraged Ramkrishna Forgings for an estimated business of Rs 70 crore over a 5-year period. The products will be used in the rear axle applications.
Spandana Sphoorty Financial was down 1.42%. The NBFC said a meeting of the management committee of the board of directors is scheduled to be held on Thursday, 10 March 2022 to consider fund raising plans. The funds would be raised via the issue of non-convertible debentures (NCDs) on a private placement basis.
Politics:
As per exit polls conducted by the media, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is expected to sweep with a majority in Uttar Pradesh and Manipur, while the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) will unseat the Congress in Punjab, as per the polls for the just-finished five assembly elections released on 7 March 2022. In Uttarakhand, the ruling BJP may emerge as the first party to retain power in the hill-state. The BJP is likely to retain power in Manipur. Goa is likely to witness a fractured mandate in the recently contested assembly elections.
The elections to the five states - Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Uttarakhand, Goa and Manipur - were held in seven phases between 10 February 2022 and 7 March 2022. The results will be announced on 10 March 2022.
