Exchange traded funds (ETFs) are securities that represent the composition of a stock market index, a sector or an asset class such as Gold. They are listed and traded on stock exchange like an individual stock. 

Basically, ETFs allow you to buy or sell units in the collective performance of an entire stock or asset portfolio as a single security, e.g. Gold in the form of Gold ETF.
